RA 13 is quite a doozy.
Which I call Bill & Ed’s Edited Adventure.
First, it is the first episode to begin with the Apple logo & “Apaul Corps” title.
Which is odd since episodes 11 & 12 were posted on the same day, Dec 20th, 2006.
One of the central pieces in this video is the clip from the filming of the making of Lennon’s Imagine album in 1971, in which George and Phil Spector are at the Lennon house.
The original footage can be seen in the 1988 film Imagine: John Lennon, and on the 2000 DVD Gimme Some Truth.
I will show not only how this sequence was edited differently in both films, but also how IAAP ran with it.
The dialogue from the IAAP video:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnMBA6E2eZg
Harrison: Is that a fresh pot of tea?
Yoko: Yes
Lennon: It’s fairly fresh.
Lennon: This is actually a Beatle wife fixing the tea for one of the Fab Four, ex-Bealtes…
Harrison: Fab Three.
Lennon: Fab Three, yeah… ha! (smiles goofily)
-cut-
Harrison: I see Beatle Bill making a pig of himself.
Lennon: He’s not doing to well
-cut-
these days, is he? Beatle Ed.
*People laughing
Harrison: Well he’s number 5 in Sweden.
Lennon: Oh, in Sweden? That’s it.
*Lennon makes large lampooning wink to camera.
The footage has been shuffled around!
If you watch this version of the footage, which is from the Imagine documentary film, we hear:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=QS_Ytpn27XQ
Harrison: Yoko, is that a fresh pot of tea? (George’s plate empty)
Yoko: Yes
Harrison: Can I have some?
Lennon: It’s fairly fresh.
Lennon: This is actually a Beatle wife fixing the tea for one of the Fab Four, ex-Bealtes…
Harrison: Fab Three.
Lennon: Fab Three, yeah… ha! (smiles goofily)
-cut-
Harrison: I see Beatle Bill making a pig of himself.
*Phil Spector laughs self-consciously.
-cut-
Lennon: Do you see much of The Beatles these days? The other Beatles? –unintelligible-
Harrison: The four Beatles. Beatle Ed. (George eating with plate full)
Lennon: Beatle Ed? How is he?
*People laughing
Harrison: He was alright, but he was just going off on a tour.
*Lennon leans in over George’s plate
Lennon: Beatle Ed’s not doing to well
-cut-
(Lennon now leaning back, away from George) …these days, is he? Beatle Ed.
Harrison: Well, he’s number 5 in Sweden.
Lennon: In Sweden, that’s it.
*Lennon makes large lampooning wink to camera.
Now, on the Gimme Some Truth DVD, the sequence goes as such:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDhQ56OwDLY
Cut to kitchen- shot of Lennon as he makes large lampooning wink to camera.
Harrison, or a man to Harrison’s right: Do you ever see much of the Bealtes these days?
Lennon: Eh, the Beatles, no. I did see Beatle Ed, though, recently. He’s doing quite well in Sweden I believe; number 5…
*Yoko & George laughing. (George’s eating with full plate)
Spector: Number 5!
Lennon: Number 5? That’s it. Yeah,
-Cut to different shot in kitchen-
Lennon: I heard that, too.
Harrison: Yoko, is that a fresh pot of tea? (George’s plate is empty)
Yoko: Yes
Harrison: Can I have some?
Lennon: It’s fairly fresh.
Lennon: This is actually a Beatle wife fixing the tea for one of the Fab Four, ex-Bealtes…
Harrison: Fab Three.
Lennon: Fab Three, yeah… ha! (smiles goofily then points to George) Beatle Ed, doing very well in Sweden.
Yoko: And I have my wife here. This is my wife (points to John).
Lennon: Yeah, I’m Beatle wife number 3.
-cut-
Harrison: I see Beatle Bill making a pig of himself.
*Phil Spector laughs self-consciously.
-Camera pans over to Phil Spector eating food.
Lennon: He likes his, um, whatever it’s called…
Yoko: Does he like chemical stuff, George?
Lennon: Sugar isn’t chemical.
Yoko: What is it then?
Lennon: It’s pure sugar from the mouth of Mr. Tettin(?) himself, he used to deliver it back in Liverpool.
So first of all, IAAP shuffled the footage to make it seem as if they were talking about “Paul’s replacement” and that he wasn’t doing well, but was #5 in Sweden.
Which brings me to my second point:
McCartney was doing quite well all around the world at this time in 1971.
Two months prior to this, he had released his Ram album, which, although was slammed by critics, was #1 in the UK, Canada, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, and Sweden (though he did not tour Sweden).
#2 in the US, Italy, and so on.
His single Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey was a smash success and also reached #1 on many charts.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ram_(album)
Third of all; if Paul really did die and was replaced by an impostor, why would John laugh about it and grin goofily? Isn’t he supposed to be devastated? The rest of the diners were laughing, too.
They may likely be making fun of the recent PID rumors that had started up.
Remember this is shortly before Harrison appeared on the Dick Cavett show and said there were multiple Beatles.
Why George calls Phil Spector Bill, I’m not sure, but he’s clearly referring to Spector, who laughs sheepishly at George’s comment as George looks directly at him making eye contact. Even when George says that line, Lennon looks over at Phil and Phil’s plate.
Lennon then immediately says, “He likes his…” but gets cut of by Yoko’s question about sugar.
Perhaps he called him Bill because it is difficult to say Phil with a mouth full of food, which George has at that moment. As you will notice, he pauses before saying “Bill”, as if he’s trying to position his food so as to say Phil, but couldn’t do it quick enough.
It’s likely he called him “Beatle” B/Phil because he produced the Let It Be record. Or just to continue the Bealte Ed joke, and the name Bill was the first he thought of.
The “Fab Three” thing I’ll give IAAP as an oddity, though the Bill & Ed they’re talking about, joking or not, is certainly not about Paul.
So, the way he spliced this video together, omitting the rest of the context to create another false implication, is a bit of a cheap shot. It’s consequential relevance is not very high – once the rest of the footage, and it’s context, has been taken into consideration.
It’s the same as taking one verse out of the bible, presenting it out of context, and building a dogma around it.
Unless there’s a higher purpose/larger context for him to do these things. If so, I welcome anyone to present it.
So, most importantly-
Why are there two different iterations of the Beatle Ed/Sweden thing? Three if you count Lennon calling George Beatle Ed.
I suppose the thing that is weirder than somebody shuffling footage around to make videos with false implications, is that these casual, candid scenes of the gang hanging out at the Lennon House had re-shoots of certain dialogues.
And of all things to reshoot, why a part about a “Beatle Ed” and Sweden?
It’s like they said, “Hey, let’s reshoot that part about Beatle Ed and Sweden!”
Why?!
It’s certainly interesting that John’s big wink come before one of the “Bealte Ed” dialogues.
And it almost seems as if George’s “Beatle Ed” spiel was overdubbed in places, taking into consideration the food in his mouth and John’s positioning before and after the cut.
And why was John’s “Beatle Ed” part moved to the beginning of the sequence in Gimme Some Truth, when George’s plate is full, only for it to be empty a few seconds later, when asks for tea?
…very strange.
